Karen Roush's poem "Drawing the Shades" (Art of Nursing, December 2006) touched me deeply. I imagine she may have trod the same floorboards that I have, for many sleepless nights, after losing a child. If so, I am very sorry for her loss. I have sought the same shelter the poem describes. Now, as a retired 55-year-old RN, I am blessed to care for my grandson full-time while my daughter works.

Thank you for "Drawing the Shades." It is beautiful, simple, profound, and comforting. It describes the place where many of us have sought refuge ("that corner in the basement") after a loss. Part of the power of poetry is discovering the emotions one has experienced, and what Karen Roush has tapped into is part of our common humanity.
