Abstract

  • The topical drug cantharidin (Ycanth) has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat molluscum contagiosum skin infection. The product must be administered by a trained health care provider.
  • The most common adverse effects of treatment are application site reactions.
  • Nurses must use care when applying cantharidin; the product must not be taken orally or enter the eyes, as toxic effects can occur. The drug is flammable, even when dry, until removed from the skin.
