Larger size for larger patients

Dale Medical Products, Inc., offers a new, larger size Dale Abdominal Binder for the postoperative support of obese patients. Made with a latex-free, all-elastic material, the 15-inch binder is adjustable up to 94 inches. The binder evenly distributes compression to brace abdominal muscles, promote muscle redevelopment, and encourage mobility to decrease the risk of complications, such as pneumonia and atelectasis. And its paneled construction facilitates diaphragmatic breathing and splints the wound for coughing.

Five in one

BioSign by Oxford BioSignals Medical introduces a new way to monitor a patient's vital signs. This early warning system continuously measures five vital signs-heart rate, respiration, blood oxygen level, temperature, and blood pressure-and compares their relative status. It then uses this information to generate the BioSign Patient Status Index, which is measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the furthest deviation from normal. The index is delivered in real time and it updates instantaneously as new vital signs are input either manually or automatically. This technology gives health care providers and rapid response teams a fast, reliable way to identify a potential clinical crisis early so they can intervene to correct the problem before it gets out of hand.

Bottles fit to drop right in

EPS, Inc., announces its line of Steri-Dropper bottles, designed for the extemporaneous packaging of sterile ophthalmic solutions. Steri-Dropper consists of 3-, 7-, and 15-mL polyethylene vials, manufactured from a special zinc stearate-free resin. This plastic minimizes the risk of particulate forming in certain ophthalmic preparations. The bottles, tips, and caps are packaged in blisters of two, so nurses can prepare the amount they need instead of having to expose numerous bottles when they only need to make a few solutions.

It's automatic!!

A new line of automated pill dispensers by AutoMeds is available for patients who require multiple medications to sustain their medical care at home, such as seniors and those with chronic illnesses. Designed to promote optimal medication results, the new pill dispensers establish a daily routine for delivering medications in the appropriate quantities, at the correct time each day, for up to 7 days before refilling. The standard AutoMeds model automatically regulates medication dispensing. An advanced model, with integrated monitoring features, offers emergency monitoring response capabilities with phone line connectivity. Upon emergency activation, the advanced model becomes a live speakerphone that allows two-way communication between the user and the designated contact person. Users also have the option of wearing a pendant that remotely activates this emergency response feature. Both models have a high pill volume capability that allows for large medication quantities of up to 150 pills per day (25 medications in each of the six dispensing times), can be loaded for the entire week, and include an 80-character LCD display that allows users to program the preferred times for dispensing and informs them of medication parameters and potential interactions (such as "take with food" or "avoid sunlight"). When the medication isn't retrieved during a preset time frame, an alarm will continue to sound at regular intervals.

Moli1901, an experimental compound for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, passed its latest placebo-controlled, double-blinded phase II clinical trial with positive results. The study was performed in multiple centers in Europe to test the safety and tolerability of aerosolized Moli1901 on patients ages 12 to 16; patients age 16 and older were tested in phase I. Researchers assessed safety and tolerability by evaluating pulmonary function, measuring vital signs and pulse oximetry values, performing physical exams and lab tests, and monitoring ECG results. Exercise tolerance and quality of life were also assessed. The results showed that patients age 12 and older tolerated daily administration of aerosolized Moli1901 over 28 days with no unexpected safety concerns and with little or no systemic absorption of the drug. Although the study wasn't designed to test for efficacy, a statistically significant improvement in lung function was demonstrated by pre- and posttreatment pulmonary function evaluation.
