NURSES IN the acute hemodialysis unit identified a patient-care problem. While having their hemodialysis treatments, many patients would become nauseated and vomit. Other patients, just a few feet and a curtain away, would hear the vomiting and become nauseated themselves. Meal trays were sometimes delivered to the hemodialysis unit so patients wouldn't miss a meal during their treatments, adding to the combination of odors. This made the nurses ask, “Should patients be allowed to eat during hemodialysis treatments, or is there a better way?” They formed a work group to look at the literature and determine best practice on this issue.
