ABSTRACT

Evidence-based practice is the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of the best available evidence, in combination with the professional's clinical expertise and the patient's preferences, in making decisions about care. Advanced practice emergency nurses are in the ideal position to model and conduct evidence-based practice, and therefore need to master the process of taking a practice-related question or issue and formulating, implementing, and evaluating an evidence-based solution. This is the first in a series of articles describing the essential components of this process. Subsequent articles will focus on critically appraising and synthesizing the literature, then implementing and evaluating an evidence-based practice change.
