ABSTRACT

Emergency departments are overcrowded creating an environment conducive to negative patient outcomes. This study evaluated the impact of an admission unit, to relieve overcrowding, by determining if failure-to-rescue rates were greater before the admission unit than those after the admission unit. For this study, different criteria were developed, specific to the emergency department, to measure occurrences of failure to rescue. A new concept, late to rescue, is also proposed.
