The article "Nurse-Family Partnership: A Policy Priority" (Policy and Politics, November 2007) describes the best evidence-based practice a government could support: home visits by nurses with first-time, low-income mothers and their children. I'm pleased that funding will be made available for such programs and that the government is looking at the intervention as a money-saving tool.

I'm disturbed, though, by critics' views about government involvement; how else will these mothers get the skills needed? Professional nurses are imperative to success of the program. The critics would have a different view if they took the time to examine the evidence. The article convinces me that the intervention is an evidence-based practice that works.
