Abstract

The summaries that follow describe recently published research studies that we believe may hold special interest for home healthcare nurses. The first article challenges the common belief that depression is an inevitable consequence of old age. The second study describes clinical outcomes of patients with minor depression who were followed for 1 year, and the third study demonstrates the effectiveness of improving mortality by intervening with depressed older adults. The fourth article highlights the findings that there are a significant number of homebound elders with psychiatric issues whose mental health needs are not being adequately met. For additional details about the research findings, we suggest that our readers go to the original articles.
