PARTNERS WITH THE POOR

I just finished reading "A Place in the Community: Partners with the Poor" (J/M 08). I volunteer as an RN at a clinic for people without insurance. The entire clinic is run by volunteers. I loved this article.

SCHOOL NURSING: MORE THAN JUST BAND-AIDS

Thank you for Rachel Rubingh's article on school nursing, (J/S 07). As a nurse, I enjoy reaching needy children and have a comment for readers considering entering school nursing: check your school district's policies before applying. Cross check the school board's policies with your state licensure requirements. Some school nurses are stretched too thin and find themselves in no-win situations where they must choose between following a non-nurse supervisor's direction or RN license requirements. If there's a problem, it's typically considered the school nurse's fault.

If school nursing appeals to you, I suggest you attend your state's school nurse association conferences and join your district's local teacher's union. School nurses who don't join the latter are unknowingly at risk.
