Here are some quick facts for nurses considering a career in the Grand Canyon State.

* Arizona has five of the 286 Magnet facilities of the American Nurses Credentialing Center: Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center and John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital in Phoenix; Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn and Scottsdale Healthcare Shea, both in Scottsdale; and University Medical Center, Tucson.

* Arizona is a compact state. According to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, this allows a nurse to have one license (in her or his state of residency) and to practice in other compact states, as long as that individual acknowledges that she or he is subject to each state's practice laws and discipline.

* Arizona is not among the states that have passed or are considering legislation to restrict mandatory overtime, according to the Service Employees International Union Web site.

* Kingman, in the northwestern part of the state, was on Relocate-America's Top 100 Places to Live in 2007.

* The Tax Foundation ranked each state by its state and local tax burden for 2007. Arizona ranked below the median at 31st out of the 50 states, with a state and local tax burden of 10.3%, well below number one Vermont at 14.1%.

* Housing in this area of the country is expensive. Although no Arizona community ranked well on the National Association of Home Builders-Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index, the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale area did the best. People earning a median family income can afford about 44.2% of the housing there.
