Abstract

Rapid increases in the numbers of older adults in the United States have major implications for all facets of society but especially for healthcare. Government programs that currently provide resources and health insurance for older adults will continue to consume more of the federal budget. Dietetic professionals can improve the health of older adults with nutrition education and intervention and delay or prevent institutionalization. The 2005 Dietary Guidelines serve as a basis for recommendations for improving and preserving health for groups of older adults or individuals. Nutrition information and educational tools should be designed to be used easily by older adults.
