As a graduating student nurse, I recognize the importance of a residency program to help new graduates make the transition to professional nursing ("Keeping New RNs in Their Jobs," In the News, December 2007). I have prior work experience in health care but I am still apprehensive about practicing nursing on my own. Preceptorship and additional classroom instruction, which are included in a residency program, might help to boost a new RN's self-confidence.
