The American Professional Wound Care Association

Review course. The American Professional Wound Care Association (APWCA) is offering "The Essentials-A Comprehensive Review and Refresher Course on Wound Care Management and Intervention" on September 12 and 13, 2009, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and again on January 16 and 17, 2010, in Los Angeles, California. This is an intensive 2-day review for all practitioners. The September 2009 session will be held at the Renaissance Philadelphia Airport Hotel, and the January 2010 program will be held at the Sheraton Gateway LAX, near the Los Angeles Airport. Seven faculty members, all leaders in wound care and noted for their teaching and communication skills, help to make this program also serve as a valuable tool for certification examination preparation, including the Physician Wound Care Certification Exam offered by the Council for Medical Education and Testing (CMET).

The lectures will feature multiple subjects that serve as a broad-based review on the standard treatments for diabetic, ischemic, venous, and pressure ulcers. This includes management of the wounds and diseases that directly impact on healing. For more information and registration for the 15-hour course, visit http://www.apwca.org or call 215-364-4100.

Wound care certification examination. The Physician-Specific Wound Care Certification Exam, credentialing all prescribing physicians (MD, DO, and DPM) is offered by the CMET. The certification process is the examination endorsed by the APWCA and recognized by the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine. The next examination will be offered on October 25, 2009, in conjunction with the Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care in San Antonio, Texas. The examination will also be offered on November 19, 2009, in conjunction with the VEITHsymposium in New York. Plans for 2010 include offering the examination in Los Angeles (the winter date will be announced in the fall) and on April 11, 2010, in conjunction with APWCA2010 in Philadelphia.

Resources for study can be found on the CMET Web site.

National Alliance on Wound Care

The National Alliance of Wound Care (NAWC), a multidisciplinary professional wound care certification and membership organization offering the WCC credential to nurses of all levels, therapists, physicians, and their assistants, announced that since being accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies in September 2008, more than 7000 individuals in the United States are now WCC certified.

Debbie Hecker, RN, MBA, WCC, executive director, noted that WCC practitioners are now the largest group of certified wound care professionals in the United States. In addition, the NAWC is expanding its affiliate program. To that end, the first Washington, District of Columbia, area NAWC Affiliate Continuing Education Program was held at the Potomac Valley Nursing Center in June and was a great success. Similar events will be planned for WCCs in other areas of the country.

The NAWC will present the WCC Achievement Awards and Scholarship at the annual WOW Conference Banquet at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 11, 2009. Awards will be given in the following categories:

* Outstanding Research in Wound Care

* Outstanding Work in Diabetic Wounds

* Outstanding WCC of the Year.

In other news, the NAWC welcomes MedaSTAT USA, Louisville, Kentucky, a leading provider of quality healthcare products and services, as the sponsor for the NAWC's annual WCC Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to the most deserving individual nominated for the award and will also be presented at WOW.

NAWC certificants, members, and other practitioners are invited to nominate deserving WCCs or wound care professionals aspiring to become wound care certified for an achievement award or the WCC Scholarship. All nominations must be received by July 10, 2009, for consideration. To view details on the awards criteria and how to submit a nomination, please visit the Web site at http://www.nawccb.org.
