Pregnant women are advised not to drink alcohol, yet drinking rates didn't decline between 1991 and 2005, notes the May 22 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Women who are older, college educated, employed, and unmarried are more likely to drink alcohol during pregnancy for reasons that are not well understood. The report recommends that clinicians "advise women of childbearing age of the potential consequences of drinking alcohol during pregnancy," which include fetal alcohol syndrome, birth defects, and low birth weight.
