Iladene H. Filer, Colonel, U.S. Army, passed away on March 8, 2009, in Mitchellville, Maryland. She was 89 years of age. During her lifetime, Ms. Filer had an extensive career in nursing and made many important contributions to nursing education. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1944 and her Master of Science in Nursing in 1959. In 1962 she was selected as a special project officer to develop the Walter Reed Army Institute nursing program. Ms. Filer was the first director of the institute, which established a baccalaureate in nursing under the jurisdiction of the surgeon general and in cooperation with the University of Maryland. After retiring from the army in 1972, Ms. Filer served as the dean of the undergraduate program for the Catholic University of America School of Nursing until 1985. She was accorded full honors at the time of her burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
