Abstract

This case report describes an urgent care visit by a 38-year-old, athletic woman who presented with low back pain in the emergency department after beginning an aerobics class. The health care provider noted a subtle difference in the circumference of one of the patient's lower legs while performing a straight leg raise. When questioned about this, the patient stated that she pulled her calf muscle. The patient first noticed the difference in calf size "while driving back from a funeral in Nashville." This case outlines the etiology and pathophysiology of deep vein thrombosis. The article also outlines indications for ordering D-dimer and ultrasound. The use of the Wells Score risk stratification tool is also discussed herein. Discussion of treatment and follow-up are also outlined here.
