2013 Guidelines for Adult Vaccination Published

Recommendations include new information on pneumococcal vaccine, Tdap, flu vaccine

MONDAY, Jan. 28 (HealthDay News) -- The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has released updated adult vaccination recommendations for 2013; these recommendations have been published online Jan. 28 in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Based on the ACIP review and update of adult immunization schedules, approved in October 2012 , and incorporating changes to vaccine recommendations from the October 2012 meeting, Carolyn B. Bridges, M.D., from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, and colleagues have presented a updated adult immunization schedule for 2013.

According to the report, for the first time, information was added on the timing of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine relative to the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine. The recommendations for the tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis vaccine were expanded to include all adults 65 years and older as well as pregnant women with each pregnancy. In addition, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a quadrivalent influenza vaccine which contains one influenza A (H3N2) virus strain, one influenza A (H1N1) virus strain, and two influenza B virus strains. Additional changes were made to footnotes, figures, and the contraindications and precautions table.

"Providers are reminded to consult the full ACIP-vaccine recommendations if they have questions and are reminded that additional updates may be made for specific vaccines during the year between updates to the Adult Immunization Schedule," Bridges and colleagues write.
