Speech Details Practices to Improve U.S. Health Systems

Mayo Clinic CEO outlines key steps to create high-quality, low-cost care in America

THURSDAY, April 11 (HealthDay News) -- There are specific steps health care providers and policymakers should take to create high-quality, patient-centered care at lower costs, according to remarks made in an April 9 speech to the National Press Club.

In that speech, Mayo Clinic President and CEO John Noseworthy, M.D., outlined steps to create high-quality, patient-centered care at lower costs.

The three key steps to delivering excellent health care are delivery of knowledge, creation of value, and funding excellence, according to Dr. Noseworthy. New research findings need to be applied to practice quickly to benefit patients. To create value, high-quality care may need to be performed at reduced cost. Understanding health outcomes data may help to identify the most efficient way to deliver high-quality care to patients, and the government needs to continue to fund innovation. Lastly, payment reform may be needed to create payment policies that address the entire continuum of care for a patient's lifetime.

"The answers to the challenges that America faces will not be simple, but if we align how we pay for care with how we diagnose and treat patients, we can reach our goal of high-value care for every patient," Dr. Noseworthy said in a statement.
