When men are questioned as to why they want to become a nurse, their responses are similar to those of their female colleagues: the desire to help others and the appeal of the profession's compassionate, caring aspects.1 But gender barriers still exist in nursing; schools of nursing influence how men are socialized into the female-dominated profession.Arguments have been made that nursing curricula exhibit a preference for women, leading to a feminization of the profession.2 The lack of male faculty and other suitable male role models is repeatedly identified as a major barrier to meeting the learning needs of male students.2-4At our facility, we set out to describe the professional values of male nurses and to explore areas of values dissonance and values congruence between male and female nurses. Using an American Nurses Association's tool called the Nurses Professional Values Scale (NPVS), a 44-item Likert scale covering 11 domains of professional nursing values, we assessed the rankings
