ABSTRACT
Researchers studying the risks of tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have found that use of TCAs is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).The study looked at 14,784 adults with no known history of CVD and found that 729 reported using an antidepressant. Over an 8-year period, researchers found that participants taking TCAs had a 35% higher risk of CVD compared to those taking SSRIs, who didn't show an increased risk of CVD.The study reinforces the need for healthcare providers to carefully consider a patient's cardiovascular health when prescribing antidepressants.Source: Hamer M, Batty GD, Seldenrijk A, Kivimaki M.
