ABSTRACT
I frequently hear the comment that we live in a time of information overload. I agree that we have more information at our disposal than at any time in the past but find that the information is not always presented in a clear and understandable manner. Therefore, I was pleased to learn of two newly published books that focus on communication and writing. In addition, in keeping with the information and communication theme of this column, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) has partnered with Dr. Oz and others in providing online information to patients or consumers written by those who know the answers to questions commonly asked: nurses and other providers of care.The first book is by Kathleen D. Pagana, The Nurse's Communication Advantage. 2010, Sigma Theta Tau International, Indianapolis, IN. 270 pages; $24.95.Dr. Pagana's name may be familiar to you as the author of Mosby's Diagnostic and Laboratory Test Reference and Mosby's Manual of Diagnostic and Laboratory Tests. In The Nurse's Communication Advantage, the introduction presents the case for business communication skills needed by nurses as they progress through their career. Nurses learn about patient communication in school and practice it in their work life but commonly have not had similar education surrounding business communication. As stated, "business communication skills can make or break a career" (p. xiii). People who are promotable are those with the best relationships and to have these relationships, one needs to be the best communicator possible. As a nurse, you understand the need for communication that builds trust, promotes understanding, and empowers others (p. xiii). Pagana's book approaches the various aspects of communication in a very engaging manner.I found myself paging through the chapters and enjoying every minute of the time spent.
