ABSTRACT
Treatment for breast cancer can produce disturbing symptoms such as hot flushes-the sudden sensation of heat or sweat centering on the face and upper chest. Hormone therapy with estrogen or the combination of estrogen and progestogen is highly effective for the treatment of hot flushes in women without a history of breast cancer. However, hormonal therapy is not recommended for women with a history of breast cancer because of its potential adverse effects, which include inducing cancer growth and increasing the risk of breast cancer recurrence and the risk of thrombosis. Therefore, nonhormonal therapy such as the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) has emerged as safer alternatives to treat hot flushes in women with a history of breast cancer. Other alternatives such as the anticonvulsant gabapentin, vitamin E, and psychological interventions have been investigated in postmenopausal women but with inconclusive
