ABSTRACT
The abuse of illicit drugs and prescription medications presents challenges for many health care professionals. As part of a commitment to be part of the solution to prescription drug abuse, a free educational resource called "Patient Evaluation Resources for Opioid Risk Management" is now free and can be found at http://www.multivu.com/mnr/5441-healthcare-professionals-substance-abuse-tool . This resource offers a relevant and interactive tool that engages the learner through critical thinking and real-world scenarios while also improving patient care while managing risks. The PERFORM resource CD-ROM with an accompanying resource binder includes the following: 1. Case vignettes illustrating low, moderate, and high-risk patients; 2. video from 4 leading health care professionals providing insight and guidance in the utilization of pain assessment tools; 3. patient screening tools; 4. documentation and monitoring information; 5. patient education tips; 6. links to other resources for health care professionals; and 7. links to resources that health care professionals can provide to their patients. The PERFORM resource, along with a wide variety of learning tools, is available at no cost for health professionals in order to improve practice skills and support improved patient care. These tools are available at www.PurduePharmaMed.com .Every day, nurses and pharmacists handle chemotherapy and other hazardous drugs in the workplace. Some of the drugs have been known to cause cancer, reproductive and developmental problems, allergic reactions, and other adverse effects that can be irreversible even after low-level exposure. Describing guidelines issued by the Occupational Safety and Hazard Agency, the National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health, and other governing bodies, many health care workers are unaware of the risks they face when conducting tasks such as connecting syringes to injection ports, transferring drugs between containers, or spiking intravenous containers.
