  • High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (jet ventilation) improves respiratory outcomes for premature infants only if administered at centers where the staff is highly experienced in giving the treatment, according to two studies.

    Researchers found that infants treated with jet ventilation could be extubated earlier than infants in the control group and that some infants in the jet ventilation group had a lower risk of death and lower need for supplemental oxygen.

    Overall, the evidence indicates that high-frequency ventilation doesn't improve outcomes unless used according to strict protocols by highly experienced clinicians.
