MYTH: Nosocomial pneumonia develops only in patients on mechanical ventilation .

FACT: Mechanically ventilated patients are at greatest risk for nosocomial pneumonia, but many patients breathing without assistance also are vulnerable, including those who are immunosuppressed and those who have cardiopulmonary disease or any other serious illness. Although elderly patients are especially susceptible to nosocomial pneumonia, it strikes patients of all ages.
