TRAUMATIC INJURIES weren't a usual part of my day. As a company nurse working in a Chicago skyscraper, I treated mainly minor ailments and provided health education to employees. One morning, however, I found myself immersed in an unusual situation when an employee rushed in to tell me that someone had been hit by a taxi in front of our building.

I grabbed a first-aid kit and rushed outside. After breaking through the small crowd that had gathered, I found a well-dressed woman lying on the pavement with her head in a pool of blood.

She was conscious, so I identified myself as a nurse. I told her to lie still and not to move her head and neck. ...
