    Therapy that combines two drugs commonly used to treat enlarged prostate glands is far more effective at easing symptoms than either drug used alone, according to new research. Used alone, each of the two drugs, doxazosin and finasteride, reduced the risk of worsening symptoms by about a third. Used together, the two drugs worked twice as well, reducing the risk by two-thirds. Doxazosin relaxes muscles that restrict the flow of urine. Finasteride works by shrinking the prostate gland.

    Researchers studied the combination treatment in a trial involving more than 3,000 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia treated at 17 U.S. hospitals. Men in the study received one of four protocols: doxazosin alone, finasteride alone, both drugs, or a placebo.
