DRUG NEWS: Nitrates may wear out cartilage

    Elderly women who take nitrate drugs may be at increased risk for developing hip osteoarthritis, according to new research. For more than 8 years, researchers followed almost 6,000 white women age 65 or older. They surveyed them twice for nitrate use and conducted pelvic radiographs at the start and end of the study.

    During the follow-up period, 566 women developed new joint-space narrowing in one or both hips. After adjusting the data for age, height, weight, bone mineral density, and estrogen use, researchers found that women who reported using nitrate drugs (mainly sublingual nitroglycerin) were significantly more likely to have joint-space narrowing than women who didn't report using nitrate drugs. They didn't detect any association between the dose of nitrate drugs a woman took and her likelihood of developing osteoarthritis.
