The leading cause of drug toxicity in the United States, acetaminophen can destroy the liver when taken in large doses. The FDA has approved acetylcysteine (Acetadote Injection) to prevent or lessen liver damage from an acetaminophen overdose. The first I.V. treatment for acetaminophen overdose on the market, Acetadote is most effective when given within 8 to 10 hours of acetaminophen ingestion.

The most common adverse reactions to Acetadote are rash, urticaria, and pruritus. Some patients experience acute flushing and erythema of the skin; these reactions usually occur 30 to 60 minutes after the infusion starts and may resolve spontaneously even if the infusion continues.
