    The best defense against heatrelated illnesses or reactions is prevention. Here are some tips:

    * Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink. Drink more fluids, regardless of your activity level.

    * Avoid liquids that contain caffeine, alcohol, or lots of sugar; these actually make you lose more body fluid. Also avoid very cold drinks, which can cause stomach cramps.

    * If possible, stay indoors in an air-conditioned place. Don't expect a fan to prevent heat-related injuries when the temperature is in the 90s.

    * If you have to be outside in the heat, limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.

    * Cut down on exercise. If you must be active in hot weather, drink two to four glasses of cool, nonalcoholic fluids each hour and rest often in the shade.

    * Protect yourself from the sun with clothing and sunscreen.
