One of the graduate nurses in our unit just failed her state board exam. Can she continue working as a nurse until she passes the exam, or should her responsibilities be limited? —R.S., MD.

In some states, graduate nurses who fail the state board exam can function only as nursing assistants until they pass the exam. If that's the case in your state, this graduate nurse should be charting only those actions that fall within a nursing assistant's scope of practice and job description in that facility.

Also check hospital policy on this issue. If state law and other legal guidelines don't specify otherwise, hospital policy may permit her to continue working as a new graduate until she takes the exam again.
