I'm returning to nursing after 6 years raising a family. I don't want to specialize in hospice, but I've never shied away from talking with patients who are terminally ill. I just want to make sure I'm doing it the right way. How can I help patients feel comfortable with me? —P.O., PA.

Many nurses have been warned against getting emotionally involved, but I believe that getting involved is what happens when you genuinely care about your patients. I know that the patients with whom I've become the most involved are the ones with whom I've felt the greatest reward.
