    My patient, 30, is 2 months postpartum and exclusively breast-feeding her infant. She's scheduled for a cholecystectomy and wants to continue breast-feeding. Can she safely do this, and if so, how can I help? —L.E., MASS.

    Mavis Schorn, RN, CNM, MS, replies : A woman who's breast-feeding and facing surgery needs caregivers willing to do all they can to support her. Besides her concerns about breast-feeding, your patient may also be worried about separation from her baby. Here's how you can help.

    Hospitals should have policies in place to accommodate breast-feeding women and their babies; these should address infection control issues to protect babies. Encourage continuous rooming-in with another adult caregiver for the baby. Keep an electric, high-grade breast pump at the patient's bedside throughout her hospital stay.
