Researchers are investigating the value of using drugs approved for other purposes to help people recover from addiction to cocaine, alcohol, and other substances. Sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, human studies are under way on 21 drugs, including:

* the antidepressants fluoxetine (Prozac) and venlafaxine (Effexor)

* baclofen, approved to treat spasms, cramps, and muscle tightness in people with multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries

* the antiseizure drugs tiagabine and topiramate

* methylphenidate (Ritalin), widely prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

* amantadine, approved to treat viral respiratory tract infections

* ondansetron, used to prevent ...
