I've been a nurse for over 20 years in both military and civilian hospitals. My experience includes obstetrics, critical care, and medical/surgical nursing. In my current position, I'm often assigned to the ED, which I love. I'm also finishing an LPN-to-BSN program and will graduate in a few months .

I recently told my nurse-manager that I'd like to continue working in the ED as an RN after I graduate. To my dismay, he said he “probably” can't hire me, despite my background, because I'll be considered a new grad. Hospital policy requires new grads to have at least 1 year's experience before they can work in the ED .

I feel I have more than enough experience already. What do you think? —M.S., ...
