    ACCORDING TO the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the American Diabetes Association (ADA), about 40% of Americans between the ages of 40 and 74 have prediabetes, putting them at increased risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A study by the NIH-sponsored Diabetes Prevention Program Research Group found that 58% of these patients can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes by adopting a lifestyle-intervention program. By following guidelines from the study, you can help patients initiate these important changes.

    Prediabetes describes blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not high enough to warrant the diagnosis of diabetes. The following tests help identify prediabetes and diabetes:
