The popular magazine Consumer Reports has added prescription drugs to the products it reviews. The free service offers consumers the same type of analysis the magazine now performs for products such as cars and refrigerators.

To compare drugs, Consumer Reports relies on drug safety and effectiveness reviews done for 12 states by the Center for Evidence Based Policy, part of the Oregon Health and Science University.

Consumer Reports launched its Best Buy Drugs Web site with reviews of three types of popular drugs: proton pump inhibitors for heartburn and acid reflux disease, cholesterol-reducing statins, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pain.
