    What is erectile dysfunction?

    Erectile dysfunction (ED), also called impotence, is an ongoing inability to get and keep an erection for sexual activity. The National Institutes of Health estimate that between 15 and 30 million American men have ED. In most cases, ED is a symptom of a medical disorder or a side effect of medication, such as a drug taken for high blood pressure, heart disease, or depression. You're more likely to develop ED if you have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, prostate enlargement, spinal cord injury, or stroke; if you smoke or drink heavily; if you aren't very physically active; or if you're overweight.
