MYTH: Infective endocarditis is more common in women than men and in younger patients than older ones .

FACT: Infective endocarditis, an inflammatory infection of the lining of the heart chambers and valves, is three times more likely to occur in men than women. Because of the increasing proportion of older people in the population and age-related calcific aortic stenosis (which can lead to infective endocarditis), between 25% and 50% of patients with infective endocarditis are over age 60.
