    A case study should present a clinical situation that is likely to be seen in the clinician's experience. The introduction of the relevant case information takes place in a case review. Definitions and etiology may be included to inform the reader as well. The screening, management, and evaluation performed by the clinician are presented in a sequential manner that simulates a clinical situation. Thus, sharing of clinical case studies and patient management for discussion is a valuable method of teaching critical thinking skills to clinicians.

    The objectives of this case study are to

    1. define child sexual abuse,

    2. review admission and screening process with a suspected child abuse case,

    3. report the management and the forensic nurse's role, and

    4. report the follow-up of the legal outcome of the case.

    On May 7, Maria, a 6-year-old girl, was brought into the emergency department (ED) by her mother. The mother had received a telephone call from Maria's school to pick her up from the nurse's office. Maria had been crying and would not urinate because she was afraid it would hurt. Her mother took Maria immediately to the ED for an examination. She usually checks her daughters when they have a complaint. Maria and her 2 sisters are usually not inhibited in telling and showing their mother any irritation or rashes on their bodies. This time, however, Maria would not let her mother look at her body.

    Maria told her mother that she had pain in her vaginal area, and that her father, Juan, had touched her “private part” with his hands, finger, and “weenie” while he was baby-sitting the 3 girls on May 1 in the afternoon. She said Juan tried to put his penis into her vagina and that caused ...
