    AN AGITATED Justin Winters, 19, is brought to your ED by paramedics, who report that he's having visual hallucinations. They've established I.V. access with an infusion of 0.9% sodium chloride solution and administered oxygen by non-rebreather mask. Mr. Winters denies chest pain but says he has palpitations. You take his vital signs, which are: BP, 220/104; pulse, 146; respirations, 24; and temperature, 100° F (37.8° C).

    What's the situation?

    Mr. Winters' violent behavior prompted his parents to call the police, who found yellow crystals in his possession. A friend of Mr. Winters identified the yellow crystals as “lemon drops,” a street name for methamphetamine.
