Dilute sodium hypochlorite solution (Dakin's solution) is commonly prepared using 1,000 ml irrigation bottles of sterile water or 0.9% sodium chloride solution that are then relabeled and stored in the patient's room with dressing supplies. Sometimes stored in patient rooms too is sterile water that the nurses use to dilute crushed medications for administration through feeding tubes. One hospital recently reported that a nurse mistakenly used Dakin's solution that had been stored next to a sterile water bottle to dilute crushed medications. Fortunately, the nurse noticed the mistake before administering the drug.
