Worldwide, six conditions (see graph) cause 73% of childhood deaths each year, according to a report from the World Health Organization (WHO).
Of the nearly 11 million children who die annually, 42% were African and 29% lived in southeast Asia. Researchers identified poor nutrition as an underlying cause in 53% of childhood deaths. Preventable and treatable diseases-pneumonia, malaria, diarrhea, and measles-account for 48% of deaths. Researchers used data from publications and continuing studies to compile their figures.
WHO estimates the causes of death in children, The Lancet, J Bryce, et al., March 26, 2005.
