CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, urinary incontinence (UI) isn't an inevitable or normal part of aging—yet UI affects about 30% of older adults living at home and about 50% of those in nursing homes. Women are much more likely to experience UI than men. Besides physical problems such as skin breakdown, UI can cause various emotional problems—embarrassment, frustration, depression, and loss of self-esteem. These can lead to social isolation, loss of independence, and even institutionalization.

Fortunately, UI is highly treatable in most cases. In this article, I'll discuss what you can do to help your patient regain control and maintain her independence.
