A CLUSTER OF SIGNS and symptoms related to lifestyle and metabolic risk factors, metabolic syndrome affects an estimated 47 million Americans. It's strongly linked to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular (CV) disease, and stroke. By identifying risk factors early and intervening appropriately, you can help patients delay or prevent serious health problems. In this article, I'll discuss how to screen adults for metabolic syndrome and what to teach them.

Big waist, big risks

The most important risk factors for metabolic syndrome are abdominal obesity (increased waist circumference) and insulin resistance. (See When cells shut out insulin .) Other risk factors include hypertension, elevated fasting glucose, elevated triglycerides, and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) concentrations.
