Recently, a 16-year-old girl with a fractured tibia was admitted to the pediatric unit where I work. Her parents gave informed consent to reduce the fracture. When they went home, the patient told me she was afraid she might have contracted HIV and wanted to be tested so long as her parents didn't find out. The test was positive.
