MARK SULLIVAN was admitted to a psychiatric unit with a diagnosis of psychotic disorder. Mark had a significant history of mental illness, with many previous hospitalizations and at least three suicide attempts. Although he said he wasn't having hallucinations in the hospital, he still had fleeting suicidal ideations.

Mark was placed on behavior observation to ensure his safety, and the unit's attending physician prescribed oral risperidone (Risperdal), a new-generation antipsychotic that's less likely to cause extrapyramidal symptoms than conventional antipsychotics. After several days of hospitalization, Mark's psychosis persisted as did his flat affect, suicidal ideas, and labile mood.
