Coumadin is a blood thinner used to keep your blood from clotting too easily. Clots inside blood vessels can cut off blood flow. If a clot breaks loose, it can travel to the brain, causing a stroke, or to the heart or lungs, causing a heart attack or breathing problems.

You have a higher risk of a dangerous clot if you have certain health problems, such as an irregular heartbeat or poor circulation in your legs, or if you have an artificial heart valve. By taking Coumadin, you can lower your risk of a clot.
