A: Let's start by quickly reviewing the basic components of the cardiac conduction system.

The heart is both an electrical system (cardiac conduction system) and a pump (the myocardium). For the heart to work effectively, the conduction system and the myocardium must work together. The conduction system is composed of key points in the heart called pacemaker sites. Each pacemaker site has its own inherent, or automatic, rate. The three pacemaker sites are:
