IN JUNE 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine (Gardasil), which protects against four strains of HPV. Although most HPV infections are asymptomatic and transient, four HPV strains, 6, 11, 16, and 18, together are responsible for 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts. 1 Transmitted by direct or indirect genital contact with an infected person, genital HPV infection also rarely causes respiratory tract warts in children. 1
